Below is a small study with grease pencil and pen. I started with the grease pencil locating areas of shadow on the face, neck and shoulder on the right. Then the hair, tank top and background. This pencil is good because you can't get caught up in detail. Finally, I used the India ink "Penstix" EF to add just a few dark accents for the eyes, nose, mouth and chin. Also added the necklace. The purpose of this sketch is to become familiar with the subject, try a few things with the design, make plans for the painting. By the way, if you don't have a grease pencil you can use a Crayon of some dark color. The Sketch...
Don't really care about a likeness because this is not going to be a portrait. I'll take care to get the proportions closer in the painting. On to the Watercolor version... Located the eyes, nose mouth and chin, top of the hair, sides of the face and pigtail on the left with very light pencil. The painting was begun with a wash of diluted Raw Umber tube paint on the side of the face and neck. Then, fluid Red was dropped in and allowed to flow, but also manuvered with the brush. A light wash for the other eye and then the red. The area for the dark background is flooded with a larger brush. Fluid Blue, Violet, Black and Green are added to make a fairly dark shape. On to the tank top which is made red with areas of violet. Back to the face and neck adding more red near the shadow line for a little modeling.
Stepping back to evaluate... I was going to show the hair on the dark side, but this looks pretty good as is. I like the way the white space flows through the figure. The viewer fills in the missing pigtail, shoulder and arms. I'll let it dry and think about it. Next day, at the workshop... I gave a watermedia workshop today and did this as the second demo. Watercolor on Absorbent Ground by Golden, on masonite panel.
May work on this more tomorrow. I think it's better than the first one.
