Robert
Bissett
Born in
Little Falls, New York, Robert Bissett is known for the life-like quality
of
the faces he paints. His Plein-air landscapes are also notable, especially
those done in Alaska and Idaho.
He
graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1967, served over five years
as a
pilot including two tours in Viet Nam. Returning to school after the
service
he graduated from Washington State University with a degree in
architecture,
Summa Cum Laude. A career in architecture seemed more
practical, but the
urge to paint became overwhelming in the summer of 1979.
That fall he had his
first show at a gallery in Anchorage, Alaska. Most of
the paintings were land-
scapes and it sold out. The following spring one of
those mountain portraits was
selected as the subject for a four thousand
edition Beautiful Alaska promotional
print, 16" x 48". Bissett moved to
Idaho in 1980. He has traveled throughout the
US, Japan, Australia, Spain,
Turkey, Ethiopia, Greece, Iran, Greenland, England,
Puerto Rico, Mexico and
Costa Rica. His paintings are a valued part
of many private collections.

Statement:
Painting landscapes, still life, Native Americans, and especially portraits,
is my passion. I started drawing before kindergarten with
the guidance of my Father. Ever
since making pictures has been at the core of my existence. It's always
thrilling to experience the moment a painting takes a life of its own. One
instant there is an amalgamation of marks on a surface and with the addition
of a single stroke it is transformed.
I consider each painting an opportunity to create
a work of art that exhibits both beauty and timelessness. It's satisfying to
know that my painting could one day become a cherished heirloom and provide
pleasure for many years to come. I feel I've been blessed with a talent that
can bring joy to the lives of others. I want to meld the physical and
spiritual characteristics of each subject I paint into the most telling
work of art possible. Conveying the essence is paramount.
My mentors are the great
masters past and present, such as Andrew Wyeth, Sargent, Cassat, Parrish,
Rembrandt and many others. My
challenge as an artist, is to
strive for the standard of excellence they've established.
I continue to carefully studied all the masterful paintings available
in museum collections and
galleries around the country. During
my regular pilgrimages, As I meticulously examine these masterpieces I'm
always considering the best way to incorporate what I've observed into my
own work.
I encourage my portrait subjects to pose from life, as often as their schedules
permit. Obviously it gives me a chance to get to know them better. Also,
painting from direct observation allows me to incorporate the subtle nuances
of form and color, that photography cannot capture.
I use the reference photos and video, as a
starting point. I will alter them to achieve a final composition that best
conveys my impression of the subject. Each element
must support the paintings visual concept.
I constantly strive to reach the highest of artistic plateaus in order to
best achieve my goal; to create paintings that will not only meet
but hopefully surpass all expectations.
