Trying out the new oils and mediums I plan to take to Costa Rica. From a photo I took down there four years ago. The paint is made by Chroma in Australia...Archival Oils...the same people that make Atelier Interactive acrylics. Since no info is available online from painters who have actually used these oils here's what I've found so far.

Yesterday I did a still life from a set up in the studio. I squirted out three primaries, white and black. I poured out a little Lean Medium, a pretty thin, odorless alkyd product also by Chroma, and a little Smooth Gel Medium and a little Solvent both by Chroma and odorless. I tried the Lean and Solvent first giving the canvas a thin coat to start. Then mixing the Lean freely with the bristle round on the palette the painting was begun. Bad idea. Too much medium, too much Solvent, couldn't get any more paint on. Ended up with glaze/watercolor effect. Still wet late last night, but dry to the touch this morning, which is good.

Today I tried a different approach with the same colors. I mixed the Smooth Gel with paint  about 1:2 or 1:3, using a painting knife. Much more like normal oil paint. I added Lean sparingly to my mixtures only when needed. Works ok and when they say odorless they're not kidding!

That's the reason I settled on this brand...it will dry over night and the flash point for the mediums and solvent is high enough the airlines and TSA should permit it onboard. I'll pack it with the MSDS for each product, but who knows what will happen. Will take acrylics as a back up.

Corrected a few things. May work on the clouds a bit. Really brings back the feel of air and light down there on the Osa Peninsula.

The motive was blended edges, wet into wet, nothing distinct.
