OLD NEWS: 

October 16, 2005:  Watermedia Workshop was successfully completed.  We had six attendees, all beginning painters.  The class started with a quick exercise introducing the kind of drawing needed for painters.  Bissett then explained the necessity and benefits of the thumbnail sketch.  This was followed by an explanation of the four states of paper wetness and the five pigment thicknesses of watercolor paint.  The class then did several thumbnails of their favorite paintings hanging on the gallery walls.  The idea was to use three values: light, medium and dark; and three planes:  foreground, middle ground and background.  After lunch Bissett showed some recent thumbnails from his sketch book.  He then explained how a lot can be learned from the paintings of professional artists by analyzing the picture to discover the underlying Visual Idea and then applying that to your own similar subject matter.  This was then demonstrated in a small water color painting of a Spokane street at sunset using the visual idea from a painting by Joseph Zbkvic.  Greatly inspired the class began experimenting and learning on their own for the last hour and a half.

October 1, 2005:  Announcing a Watermedia Workshop at Naples Gallery, MP 495.5, 10:30 am to 4:00 pm, October 15th, Saturday.  Beginner to advanced welcome.  Bring materials or use our's for a small fee. 

September 1, 2005:  Robert Bissett's painting "Pirate's Alley" was to appear on the cover of the Toronto Star's Sunday Magazine this weekend.  The Sunday edition has a circulation of about 447,000.  Painting can be seen showcased above.  This didn't actually happen.  Not sure if it was used inside.

August 15, 2005:  Last night was the painting demonstration during the wine tasting event at the Festival at Sandpoint.  It was well attended and a good time was had by all.  I'd like to thank everyone who stopped to talk and watch.  The many positive remarks were appreciated.  Painting is a solitary activity, so it's important to get out once in a while.

August 14, 2005:  ANNOUNCING a new way to own a work of art by Robert Bissett.  Bissett's work has been available as prints on paper.  In the very near future high quality Giclees on canvas will be offered on this website, perhaps within a week, and very reasonably priced.  Each one will be produced by the artist personally with brush strokes added also by the artist.  Only an expert will be able to pick out the original!

August 3, 2005:  Robert Bissett's entry (Red Scarf, pictured above) for The Outwin Boochever 2006 Portrait Competition sponsored by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery has been accepted.  The Gallery is welcoming portraiture into the 21st century with its first-ever competition.  Named for Virginia Outwin Boochever, a former NPG volunteer whose generous gift has endowed this program, the inaugural competition and resulting exhibition will focus on innovation and excellence in portrait painting and sculpture.  Many of today’s emerging artists are using portraiture or self-portraiture to explore complex issues of identity. At the same time, those artists are also testing the boundaries of the genre of figurative art. Others are finding success through a renewed attention to classical training in representational art. Artists who regularly create portraits on commission are also experiencing a higher level of interest in their work. In short, portraiture has become the rising star of contemporary art.

July 7, 2005 - Artist Studio Tour brochures are now seen in public places in Bonner and Boundary Counties.  Bissett is one of twenty artists and craftsmen whose studios are listed on the tour this year.  For more information click here.

July 1, 2005 - Robert Bissett returns from a week in Alaska reconnecting with family, friends and landscapes of his youth.  "I'm in awe of the mountains, glaciers, lakes and rivers of Alaska", he said.  Bissett also spent several days in Oregon and Washington visiting the coast prior to flying to Alaska.

June 17, 2005 - Robert Bissett featured artist at Timberstand Gallery for the month of June. Every year the Pend Oreille Art Council promotes an ArtWalk series in Sandpoint. Each location features a particular artist for a month. That includes a reception, display of several pieces of art and some advertising in a POAC brochure and local newspapers and magazines.  Reception June 17th.  Contact gallery for details.

June 1, 2005 - Robert Bissett receives  book proposal guidelines from North Light Books' Executive Editor to begin the process of submitting a concept for an art instruction volume.  Bissett has been researching a book idea for about twelve years which he believes will help beginners learn to paint and help painters to paint better and with more consistent results. 

May 28, 2005 - Oil Rubout, date may change due to holiday.  Will be rescheduled...probably in July.

April 15, 2005 - ROBERT BISSETT SELECTED  FOR INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION

It was announced today that Robert Bissett has been included in the ART NOW 2005 Online Global Art Annnual running through March 31, 2006.  See the 300 artists and 1200 works in the exhibition as determined by the judges, here.  Artoteque.com will now begin compiling the exhibition catalogue.  Bissett will recieve a copy of the catalogue and a Diploma of Participation.  "I'm very pleased to have this international recognition of my work and a little surprised as the judges seem to prefer conceptual and abstract art", Bissett said.

April 10, 2005 - Robert Bissett has donated a portrait to the winner of this years Junior Miss contest, Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

March 14, 2005:  The calendar, Native Americans - Alaska to Mexico, is now available to view and order online.  Original oil and acrylic paintings of Native Americans from Barrow, Alaska to the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. Thirteen beautiful images from Robert Bissett, internationally known artist.
